Cuisine Highlights

• Poulet a la moambe, chicken simmered in palm nut sauce; the dish most Congolese name first when asked about home cooking
• Saka-saka, cassava leaves pounded and slow-cooked with palm oil; eaten across the Congo basin and served with almost everything

Language & Communication

French is the official language. Lingala and Kituba are the national languages and are what you will hear on the street in Brazzaville.

Useful French: "Bonjour" for hello, "Merci" for thank you. Brazzaville sits directly across the Congo River from Kinshasa, the two closest capital cities in the world, and the ferry between them is a short crossing.

Note this is the Republic of the Congo, a separate country from the Democratic Republic of Congo on the far bank.

Cultural Etiquette

• Greet people before getting to the point; a handshake and a short exchange come first, and skipping it reads as rude
• Ask before photographing anyone, and do not photograph government buildings, bridges, airports or anyone in uniform
• Dress modestly and neatly in cities; appearance carries real social weight here, which is part of what La Sape is about
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on entry; carry it with your passport

Key Regions

• Brazzaville: The riverfront capital, facing Kinshasa across the water, with a relaxed pace and the heart of Sape culture
• Pointe-Noire: The Atlantic port and economic centre, with the country beaches most visitors actually reach
• Odzala-Kokoua National Park: Lowland rainforest known for western lowland gorillas and forest elephants; among the more serious wildlife destinations in central Africa
• Nouabale-Ndoki National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site of near-untouched rainforest, remote and difficult to reach, which is exactly why it is intact
